Amherst Past Fire Chiefs’ Association

Mission Statement- To utilize the knowledge and experience of the Past Fire Chiefs and be a benefit to the Town of Amherst. To assist the Town of Amherst Fire Service with ideas concerning upgrading the Fire Training Tower, Fire Prevention and establishing a scholarship fund. To promote awareness of the history of the Fire Service in the Town of Amherst.

The idea to form the Amherst Past Chiefs’ Association began with a conversation between past Chiefs Dan Miller from Getzville Fire Company, and Ira Striejewske from Eggertsville Hose Company. The both thought the idea of utilizing the knowledge and experience of past Fire Chiefs could be a benefit to our community. Other past Chiefs were contacted and agreed it would be a worthwhile venture. Unfortunately, before the past Fire Chiefs’ Association was formed, Dan Miller passed away.

The Amherst Past Fire Chiefs’ Association was organized in 1992. Ira Striejewske was elected President, Dick Aquino- Vice President, from Swormville, and Mike Moore- Secretary/Treasurer from Ellicott Creek. These members continue to hold these positions to this day.

Many of the Past Fire Chiefs participated in the numerous organizational meetings of the Association and discussed how we could be of assistance to the Amherst Fire service. Ideas concerning upgrading the Fire Tower, Fire Prevention, establishing a scholarship fund and assisting in Fire Service awareness were all discussed. It was decided that producing a history book, documenting the history of the Fire Service in the Town of Amherst, would be one the projects we would tackle.

A committee consisting of representatives of each of the 10 Fire Departments, along with a representative from the Fire Alarm Office, Amherst Fire Council, Amherst Fire Chiefs Association, Amherst Fire Inspectors Office and civilians was formed to accomplish the task. Each entity was asked to submit and article and photos depicting the facts and information from their respective organization. The process of compiling and organizing this information has spanned a period of more than 3 years.

We hope that this book will give insight to the public as to the growing pains the Amherst Fire Service has experienced over the years, and we would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our brother volunteer firefighters in its production.
